The IP65 Rating: What You Need to Know Before Lighting Your Outdoor Spaces

Facades, gardens, patios, walkways, parking lots, public spaces: as soon as a lighting project extends beyond the walls of a building, a technical question immediately arises—that of the luminaire’s resistance to the elements. This is where the IP rating comes into play, an essential benchmark for designing durable, safe, and high-performance installations. At Clarma, we’re here to advise you and, together with our partner Platek—a specialist in outdoor lighting—select the fixtures best suited to your project.

What is the IP Index?

The IP rating, which stands for Ingress Protection, is an international standard that assesses the level of protection an electrical device offers against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids. It consists of two digits, always in the same order.

The first digit, ranging from 0 to 6, indicates protection against solid objects (dust, sand, small objects, fingers). The higher the number, the more sealed the enclosure is. The second digit, also ranging from 0 to 6, measures protection against liquids, from simple vertical drops to prolonged immersion.

A light fixture rated IP20 is therefore suitable only for dry indoor use, while an IP67 or IP68 rating is suitable for more intense exposure to water, or even temporary immersion.

Why IP65 Is the Industry Standard for Outdoor Use

Among all these ratings, IP65 has become the standard for most residential, commercial, and landscape outdoor lighting projects. The number 6 indicates complete dust tightness: no solid particles can enter the fixture, providing long-lasting protection for the electronic and optical components. The number 5 guarantees resistance to water jets sprayed from all directions—protection that is more than sufficient to withstand rain, wind, and inclement weather over the long term.

In practical terms, an IP65 luminaire can be installed on a building facade, in a garden, along a walkway, or on an exposed patio without risk of short circuits, premature corrosion, or deterioration in lighting performance. This ensures not only technical reliability but also peace of mind for the building owner: less maintenance, a longer service life, and enhanced electrical safety over the long term.

Platek

To design and equip our outdoor projects, Clarma collaborates with Platek, an Italian manufacturer that designs lighting fixtures built to last: bollards, wall sconces, recessed spotlights, path markers, and floodlights, many of which are certified to IP65 or higher.

Platek products stand out for their almost architectural approach to outdoor lighting.  Whether to line a driveway, enhance a facade, or define a pedestrian path, the Platek range offers a reliable technical solution with refined aesthetics.

Choosing the Right IP Rating: Our Recommendations

Before selecting a light fixture for an outdoor project, there are a few questions worth asking: Will the fixture be directly exposed to the elements or partially sheltered? Is it located near a water source? What level of maintenance is feasible in the long term? These factors guide the choice between IP65 and higher ratings, helping to avoid both under-specification—which can lead to premature failures—and over-specification, which is unnecessarily costly.

At Clarma, every outdoor project undergoes a dedicated technical study that includes selecting the most appropriate IP rating, choosing suitable products from our network of partners such as Platek, and adopting a comprehensive lighting approach that respects the architecture and landscape.
